<\/a>Introdu\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Public street illumination has followed a simple operative principle for decades: lights robotically switch on at sunset and remain illumined until dawn. Road security, pedestrian visibility, and nighttime security has improved because of this approach, but at the same time it also means that thousands of luminaires continue functioning even when streets are empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rising electricity costs, determined carbon reduction targets, growing awareness of light pollution, and speedy advances in digital technology are encouraging municipalities to rethink how public illumination should operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most innovative examples comes from Loos-en-Gohelle, France, where a pilot project called “J’allume ma rue” (I Light Up My Street) was launched on June 9, 2026. Istead of  leaving lights on all through the night, the city substituted its whole street illumination network with LED luminaires and adopted an on-demand lighting strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project represents much more than a local energy-saving initiative. It shows an extensive evolution in Adaptive Street Lighting, On-Demand Lighting, Smart Street Lighting, Public Lighting Control, Smart Photocell, and Zhaga Book 18 technologies that are redefining how municipalities balance sustainability, operational proficiency, and public security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Why Are Cities Rethinking Traditional Nighttime Lighting?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Traditional street illumination has served municipalities well for decades, but it was developed during an age when electrical energy was comparatively cheap and illumination systems offered little operative flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many inhabited streets experience very little activity between night-time and early morning. In spite of nominal pedestrian or automobile traffic, illumination systems continue operating at full glare, using electricity whether anyone is present or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
